Huntsville punches well above its weight for a city of 215,000. New residents are consistently surprised by the breadth of things to do — from a world-class space museum and the largest privately owned arts facility in the US to serious hiking trails within city limits, a genuine craft brewery scene, and a 9,000-seat amphitheater booking national acts. Here's what's worth your time.

Arts & culture

Huntsville's arts scene has grown dramatically in the past decade. The Huntsville Museum of Art in Big Spring International Park hosts rotating exhibitions including significant traveling shows. The Von Braun Center is the city's main events venue, hosting concerts, conventions, and the Huntsville Havoc hockey games. The Orion Amphitheater opened in 2022 as a 9,000-seat outdoor venue that has booked major national touring acts and established Huntsville as a legitimate stop on national concert circuits.

The Panoply Arts Festival in late April is one of the Southeast's most beloved arts festivals — three days of live music, visual art, and hands-on activities in Big Spring International Park. Rocket City Brewfest brings craft breweries from across the region together each fall. The Huntsville Ghost Walk offers a more unusual cultural experience through the city's historic districts.

Outdoor recreation

Huntsville's location at the foothills of the Appalachians gives it access to outdoor recreation that most comparably-sized cities can't match. Monte Sano State Park sits within city limits and offers 20+ miles of hiking and mountain biking trails with stunning Tennessee Valley views and camping options. The Land Trust of North Alabama manages 7,000+ acres of protected land across more than two dozen trail systems — there's genuinely no shortage of new places to explore.

Hiking
Monte Sano State Park
The crown jewel of Huntsville outdoor recreation. 20+ miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking, camping, and panoramic views from the 1,621-foot summit. Within city limits — 15 minutes from downtown.
Hiking
Land Trust of North Alabama
7,000+ acres of protected land across Green Mountain, Blevins Gap, and Buck Island Trail systems. Free access, well-maintained trails, and new preserves added regularly. Best resource for discovering lesser-known trails.

City-run marina and park on the Tennessee River with boat ramp, camping, and miles of multi-use trails along Aldridge Creek. Free and accessible — a local favorite for weekend paddling and cycling.
Golf
Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail
The Shoals and Hampton Cove courses are within easy reach of Huntsville. The RTJ Golf Trail is one of the best public golf values in the country — multiple championship-caliber courses at accessible prices.
Biking
Huntsville's Trail Network
Huntsville has invested significantly in greenways and multi-use trails. The Aldridge Creek Greenway, Monte Sano trails, and the expanding city trail network offer options from leisurely family rides to serious mountain biking.

Food & drink

The Huntsville food scene has matured significantly and now offers genuinely excellent dining across multiple price points and cuisines. The Five Points and downtown corridors have the highest density of independent restaurants. Standouts include Commerce Kitchen for upscale Southern cuisine, 1892 East for farm-to-table with a full bar, and a growing number of international options reflecting the city's diverse tech workforce.

The craft brewery scene is one of Huntsville's most pleasant surprises for newcomers. Yellowhammer Brewing, Straight to Ale Taproom (inside Lowe Mill), Back Forty Beer Company, and Campus No. 805 (in a converted school building) all offer quality pours and distinct atmospheres. Ravenwood Meadery, also at Lowe Mill, adds a unique mead option to the mix. Most are within a walkable radius of each other for a self-guided tour.

Sports & entertainment

The Rocket City Trash Pandas — the Double-A affiliate of the LA Angels — play at Toyota Field, a modern 7,500-seat stadium that opened in 2020. Minor league baseball in Huntsville is a genuine community institution with affordable tickets, family-friendly atmosphere, and competitive on-field product. The Huntsville Havoc play Southern Professional Hockey League games at the Von Braun Center from October through April.

For larger events, the Von Braun Center hosts concerts, conventions, and touring Broadway productions year-round. The Orion Amphitheater has established itself as one of the best mid-size outdoor venues in the Southeast since opening in 2022.
