Federal tax, FICA and state tax on the same salary in both places. Alabama's federal-tax deduction is applied automatically — it's the reason the effective rate lands below the 5% bracket.

The deduction most paycheck calculators miss

Alabama's top bracket is 5%, which starts at just $3,000 of taxable income. Read only that and Alabama looks like a straightforwardly average tax state.

But Alabama is one of a small number of states that lets individuals deduct net federal income tax paid on the state return — Ala. Admin. Code r. 810-3-15-.20. On an $85,000 salary that removes roughly $9,000 from Alabama taxable income and cuts the state bill by about $400. At $150,000 it is worth considerably more.

Why it matters when you compare offers

Generic paycheck calculators apply Alabama's 5% to your full taxable income and overstate the bill. If you are weighing a Huntsville offer against one somewhere else, that error works against Huntsville.

It also cuts the other way: because federal tax rises with income, the deduction grows with salary — so Alabama's effective state rate falls as you earn more, which is unusual.

The result that surprises people

Moving from a no-income-tax state costs you money on the tax line. Texas, Florida, Tennessee, Washington and Nevada residents give up several thousand dollars a year moving to Alabama. Huntsville's advantage over Austin, Nashville or Dallas is housing cost, not tax.

And the gain from high-tax states is smaller than most people assume. California at $100,000 leaves you only a few hundred dollars a year better off in Alabama, because California's graduated brackets are gentle at middle incomes — its headline 13.3% applies above $721,000.
