The largest employer covered on this site — and the only one with no federal vetting gate

Huntsville Hospital Health System reports 13 regional hospitals, 2,588 licensed beds, and more than 17,000 employees.

No security clearance. No ITAR "US person" determination. The gate is professional licensure and credentialing.

Read the 17,000 figure correctly

That is a system-wide number across 13 regional hospitals — not a Huntsville-campus headcount. The flagship Huntsville Hospital is 971 beds; Madison Hospital is a separate campus. When comparing employers, do not put this number next to a single-site figure from another company.

PSLF is the underrated item on that list

Public Service Loan Forgiveness is a federal program. Qualifying employment plus 120 qualifying payments can discharge remaining federal student loan balance.

For a new nurse, physician, therapist or technologist with significant federal loan debt, employer PSLF eligibility is a material financial factor that does not show up in a salary comparison.

Verify your own eligibility through the federal program directly — employer qualification is only one of several requirements, and program rules have changed over time.

The Gate Here Is Licensure, Not Clearance

No security clearance. No ITAR determination.

Every other major employer covered on this site — Boeing, Leidos, L3Harris, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, Anduril, SAIC — screens candidates through federal vetting: ITAR "US person" status, security clearance sponsorship, or both.

Huntsville Hospital does neither. The gate is professional licensure and credentialing — an entirely different process with an entirely different timeline.

For an RN role

RequirementDetail
EducationGraduate of an accredited school of nursing
LicensureCurrent Alabama licensure
ExperiencePreferred, but new graduates accepted
BLSRequired before the conclusion of the orientation period
ACLSWithin one year of hire
The licensure timeline is your relocation constraint

Alabama nursing licensure — whether by endorsement from another state or through the Nurse Licensure Compact, depending on your situation — has its own processing timeline.

This is the healthcare equivalent of the clearance problem in the defense guides: a gate with a variable timeline that you should start early and not assume will resolve by your intended start date.

Contact the Alabama Board of Nursing before you resign a position elsewhere. Verify current compact status and endorsement processing times.

Why This Matters to a Defense-Sector Household

The recurring pattern in Huntsville relocation is a two-income household where one partner has a defense engineering offer and the other does not have a clearance, a defense background, or US person status issues resolved.

The trailing-spouse calculation

A 17,000-employee health system with roles spanning clinical, technical, administrative, facilities and IT is frequently what makes the move work financially for a household where only one partner can pass federal vetting.

If that describes your situation, this employer and SAIC have the two broadest role bases in the metro — and only one of them has no clearance gate at all.

Where to Live for a Huntsville Hospital Commute

The flagship campus sits just east of downtown Huntsville. That puts several established neighborhoods within an unusually short drive:

NeighborhoodDrive to Huntsville HospitalCharacter
Blossomwood1–4 minMid-century homes at the foot of Monte Sano, 1,100 acres of trails, no HOA. The single best hospital commute in the metro.
Twickenham Historic District~5 minAlabama's largest antebellum collection, one block from downtown. COA requirements apply to exterior changes.
Jones Valley12–18 minEstablished upscale, greenway access, The Ledges golf, strong retail corridor at Valley Bend.

The engineering premium is real; the software premium is not

Engineering pays well above national here ($59.93 vs $51.36 hourly). But computer and mathematical occupations pay slightly below the national mean despite being twice as concentrated. If you are a software developer weighing Huntsville against a major tech market on salary alone, the advantage shows up on the cost side, not the wage side. See the cost of living guide.

Questions to Ask in Every Interview

  1. What is the actual work location? "Huntsville" in a posting can mean a site 45+ minutes away. Get the address.
  2. Is the position on Redstone Arsenal or outside the gates? This changes your daily commute materially — see the Redstone Arsenal guide for gate-by-gate detail.
  3. Which program funds this position, and what is its funding status? A role on a program of record is a different risk profile than one on a reconciliation-funded initiative.
  4. Is a clearance required, and will the company sponsor? If sponsoring, is the start date contingent on an interim determination?
  5. What relocation assistance is offered, and is it in writing?
  6. If the role is tied to a facility that has not opened yet, what is the current schedule and what happens if it slips?
